Movie Review: Failure to Launch

While we were in St. Louis visiting friends this past weekend we went and saw Failure to Launch. It was good, predictable and cute all at the same time. Although I think Matthew McConaughey is a good actor who could do more serious roles as well, he seems to fill the romantic comedy role very well. He shines in movies like “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” and “Wedding Planner” and this one wasn’t much different. Except for one thing, the leading lady. The chemistry wasn’t believable 100% of the time. It wasn’t bad with Sarah Jessica Parker but it was not like Kate Hudson either. I just don’t buy her for some reason. I think she fit her Sex and the City character very well but it isn’t translating to the big screen for me. Or maybe it is the movie choice. I think it may need a little more “meat” to the dialog, the relationships and the situations to work for her. It was a bit too much fluff for her sophisticated self.

Overall, the movie was enjoyable and funny. I liked it. I love that Bradley Cooper is getting more and more movie roles. I think he is great and was so funny in Wedding Crashers. He was a good fit to be a friend to Matthew. You could picture them being friends in real life. Zooey Deschanel played the quirky and jaded roommate but I couldn’t buy the friendship – the age difference seemed blaringly obvious the entire time. I have friends of all ages, older and younger but for some reason this didn’t seem to fit. Again, I think SJP has a certain amount of sophistication to her that doesn’t “dumb down” easily for everyday roles. Besides, there is a 15 year age difference between these two women, not in the movie, in life. And yes, Sarah J. you look great and in shape with your yoga body but age passes physical, it appears in many ways and the chemistry showed on screen.

Looking for a light-hearted movie – Failure to Launch is good. Predictable. Cute.

  1. Totally agree with you. Funny. Chemistry was off. McConaughey is awesome.
